At the new world’s gate.

Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send those , the homeless, tempest-tossed to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door! In 1883, New York poet Emma Lazarus dedicated these lines to a monument that was currently under construction on the other side of the Atlantic: the Statue of Liberty which was dedicated in its place in front of Southern tip of Manhattan only three years later. In her moving lines, Emma Lazarus already foresaw the symbolic meaning that the statue would have for the millions of immigrants that arrived in America hoping for a new and better life. The Statue of Libery embodied a dream for all of these people: the dream of indipendence, peace and a new beginning in the land of opportunities.

The new Colossus.

When French sculptor Frédéric Bartholdi received the order of crafting a statue as an expression of the close connection between France and the U.S. for the 100th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence, he found inspiration in two archetypes from antiquity: the Roman goddess Libertas and the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. In years of work, Bertholdi created a statue made of more than 300 wafer-thin copper plates. Liberty enlightening the World, as it was officially named, measured impressive 46 meters and outshone every other man-made structure of its time. Engineer Gustave Eiffel constructed a filigree internal iron framework for Bartholdi’s statue to which every copper plate could be screwed separately. He also installed a spiral staircase, turning Bartholdi’s masterpiece into the first accessible statue in the world. This unique construction is stylized on the cap of the Limited Edition Statue of Liberty, dedicated to what is likely the most famous statue of the world.

The 8th world wonder.

In 1885, the more than 300 copper plates were shipped from Paris to NY in 241 wooden crates and then re-assembled on their pedestal around Eiffel’s ingenious iron skeleton. On 28 October 1886, ten years after the originally intended date, New York eventually celebrated the official dedication of the statue. Lady Liberty, as it was dubbed by the people, was praised as a breath taking bridging between architecture and engineering and celebrated as the Eight Wonder of the World. Montblanc’s celebration of the world’s most famous and inspirational statue, the Statue of Liberty. The intricate 14K solid gold fittings over the gray PVD coating are inspired by design elements of the colossal neoclassical sculpture. The barrel is engraved with the date of the Declaration of Independence in Roman numerals. The 18K solid white gold captop is a stylized version of Lady Liberty’s seven-pointed crown. A citrine is set in pocket clip, reminiscent of Liberty’s torch, and a mother-of-pearl Montblanc star reposes inside the captop. Medium (M) 18K gold nib engraved with Liberty’s torch. The pen has never been inked/dipped/used and as such is in pristine and mint condition, complete with outer card box, inner presentation box, cushion and booklet (duly stamped), a really stunning piece. Limited Edition: ##/50. As a sign of its uniqueness, each writing instrument in this higly exclusive edition bears an engraved limitation number. Considering the importance of this writing instrument the limitation number was deliberately hidden and will be revealed to the buyer only.
